Featured Designer: Jeph Hinshaw

Another Featured Designer! Jeph Hinshaw will be another designer at the show using screen printing (along with Rruss, the past featured designer) but both radically different. How? Rruss focused on shapes and angles, Jeph depicts old school pin up models and birds. No, not just because they are both visually appealing (although they do look rad on a T-shirt) Read on to find out what I learned about the collection and the deeper meaning behind his work...

1. What is the name of label/ collection (if you have one)?
"Migration"

2. Tell me a little about your label/ collection? What is the theme and medium?
“Migration” is a tribute to promote women’s human rights and to combat
sexual exploitation in all its forms.

The basic premise is screen printing. I have made a collection of
graphics by using pin-up models from vintage magazines and birds from
the book “World of Birds” by James Fisher. Their bodies are merging
together to symbolize a number of things. Pin-up models caused
controversy as one of the first exploitation of women, but at the same
time serve as a symbol for women’s freedom. The connection with the
birds is to represent freedom, but also reflect how girls are being
sold in to slavery and moved to different parts of the globe, much
like migration.

The juxtaposition of woman and bird, along with the asymmetrical
prints and shapes, go along with the fine line between sexual freedom
and exploitation.

The prints are printed on v-necks, tank tops, sexuali-tees, u-neck
t-shirt skits, and sweat shirts.

3. What was your inspiration for the collection?
Sex trafficking of women and girls has always been an issue of great
concern to me. It is an issue not necessarily overlooked, but still
not at the forefront of American’s minds. Just because sexual slavery
isn’t happening in our backyards, doesn’t mean we can forget about it.

4. What got you into designing?
A desire to share thoughts and ideas.

5. Anything else you would like to tell me? Favorite quote?
Interesting fact? Something about yourself you want the audience to
know?
At the last Dance 4 Liberation fashion show, I did a line called
Norman Fox commemorating my grandfather Norman. I took his old ties
and made them into slimmer more modern ties.

Favorite quote, "All religions pass, but this will remain: simply
sitting in a chair and looking in the distance." -V.V. Rozanov

Please come show your support at the show! Not only does his designs look incredible, the designs are showcasing woman's rights, freedoms, and sexuality. I love it.
